This kind of name is the outcome of compromises made in the Linguistic Wars.

The Grey/Gray Ocean(s) is either a single ocean or two, depending on which geologists you ask. During the Linguistic Wars, at the Battle of Cartography, the fact that the Grey Ocean was on both sides of the map caused more than a little turmoil—the situation only grew worse when it was discovered that it was spelled "Gray" on the left and "Grey" on the right. The first casualty of the battle was Francis Burningham, who suggested the cartographers pick one or another. Ultimately, the map of Faewalk was finalized with the Grey Ocean on the right and the Gray Ocean on the left, with the ocean divided by the Burningham Line. Because the geographically, the region is a singular ocean, the official name for the ocean became the Grey/Gray Ocean(s) when referring to the area as a whole.
